The 4th dimension

Maybe it’s the greatest expression of Dali’s scientific curiosity.

A 1954 surrealist painting of the Crucifixion of Jesus, it depicts Christ on what is known as a “hypercube”. Suspended strangely in the air above a figure modelled by Dalí’s wife Gala, Jesus Christ appears in a pose that has been painted by artists for centuries. Yet there are no nails in this image of crucifixion, and the cross is not made of wood. It’s not even in a dimension we can see.

Crucifixion (Corpus Hypercubus) unites a classical portrayal of Christ with a shape that happens in mathematical theory. Dalí’s floating cross is what Banchoff describes as “an unfolded four-dimensional cube”.

By breaking out of three dimensions, Du Sautoy speaks of “the idea of the fourth dimension existing beyond our material world resonated for Dalí with the spiritual world transcending our physical universe.”

This depiction of Christ the redeemer reminds us of an important reality that finds its echo in resurrection: “we are Fourth Dimensional beings living in a Three Dimensional world.” This Fourth Dimensional world is the spiritual realm; and despite that we, as humans, exist in the Third Dimension, which is the material world as we know, see and feel: We still can tap into the Fourth Dimension!

We begin to reach the eternal dimension of Jesus’ resurrection when adopting   the mind of Christ Himself: to think, believe, speak, and act according to the Word of God! Only then we will be able to overcome, by strength of the Holy Spirit, our every day’s life limitations, and walk in our true “destiny”:

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago” (Ephesians 2:10).

Each one of us is matchless in the entire universe, and is invited to accept Christ’s redemption! With our distinctive mix of talents: we are called to “fulfill our unique good destiny”!

But God’s will is not imposed. He allows us to make choices!

St. Thomas Aquinas used to say that "A man has free choice to the extent that he is rational."

God granted us the gift of “Thinking”- a fourth-dimensional element that exceeds both the environment and one’s physical senses!! The important issue is that we build the basis of our thoughts on the salvific cross of Jesus Christ Himself!

Every one of us is that person standing at feet of Jesus in Dali’s Corpus Hypercubus… and it’s up to us, to embrace Christ’s mind and touch this fourth dimension, to extend with Him beyond the dimensions of this world … or to miss the magnificence of the heavenly dimensions of His “planes” for eternity. May we choose carefully: "Eternity is too long to be wrong!"
